Kevin Butler

The Butler did it: a familiar phrase when Kevin Butler was kicking footballs.

Butler was born in Savannah in 1962 and attended Redan High School in Stone Mountain, where he was a four-year letterman in both football and soccer. As a two-time football All American at the University of Georgia, Butler kicked the Dawgs to 38 wins and two SEC crowns. He kicked a school record 60 yard field goal in a stunning 1984 win over Clemson on the way to becoming UGA’s all time leading scorer and the first kicker ever inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1985, Butler played 13 years in the NFL, helping the Bears win the Super Bowl in his rookie season. He passed Walter Payton to become the Bears all time leading scorer and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

One of the best players who ever put toe to pigskin was born on July 24, 1962, Today in Georgia History.
