For Braves fans, the phrase “Braves win” will always belong to one voice—Skip Caray.

Caray was born in 1939 in St. Louis and grew up in baseball as the son of legendary announcer Harry Caray. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he began his broadcasting career calling St. Louis Hawks basketball and moved with the team to Atlanta in 1968. He started calling Braves games in 1976 and remained with the team for 32 years.

Besides doing play-by-play, Skip had a sarcastic and witty style, frequently lampooning the Braves during their worst years, along with his other favorite targets: the movie that followed the game, his producer, or Atlanta traffic engineers. He always made up the hometown of fans who caught foul balls during broadcasts. His repeated call of “Braves win” in game seven of the 1992 National League Championship Series was his most memorable.

The broadcasting legend who signed off every game with, “So long everybody,” died on August 3, 2008, Today in Georgia History.
